Handgrip strength is defined as the exertion needed to grasp an object and is necessary for various functional activities in daily life.
Whilst it might seem like a small thing, grip strength is a good indicator of overall physical condition with good evidence behind it.
Poor grip strength is associated with an overall increased risk of poor mobility, fractures, poor memory and depression. Many of these problems lead to hospitalisation.
In my clinic, I now use hand-grip dynamometry, which allows me to measure grip strength. Having a good gauge of overall muscle strength will help personalise your follow-up plan.
